Every time I finish another Great Lives volume, I think it's my favorite one. I have to admit they're all favorites, but this one I especially love. In many cases, I managed to find the writings of the authors themselves as they described the process and inspiration behind some of our most beloved books, especially children's classics. I loved the books when I first read them. Now, knowing the stories of the authors behind them, I love them so much more. Frances Burnett, who gave us The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, recorded all her feelings of anticipation and excitement when she submitted her first writings for publication as a young girl. Within the writings are many clues as to what makes a good writer. And you may be surprised at the masterpieces that were originally rejected -- multiple times.
